As Los Angeles confronts the realities of fire, drought, and climate pressure, acclaimed essayist D.J. Waldie reflects on the four classical elements—earth, water, air, and fire—as a framework for understanding the city’s past and present. With clarity and compassion, Waldie unpacks the fragile balance between beauty and precarity in Los Angeles, weaving history, memory, and culture into a portrait of a city always in the process of becoming.
He will be joined in conversation by Alan Pullman, Founding Partner of Studio One Eleven, whose work in community-driven urban design has shaped neighborhoods across Los Angeles.
The event will also feature a special pop-up by Los Angeles Public Library’s Angel City Press, offering books on the art, design, and architecture of Los Angeles—including Art Deco Los Angeles, Los Angeles Before the Freeways, and Preserving Los Angeles.
